A Real Debate on Gun Control

June 11, 2009

I know it is difficult to discuss gun control legislation in the South, where the NRA reigns supreme and the mention of “gun control” is automatically linked with an attack on hunters’ rights.

But I think Jim Craig made an excellent point on gun control in light of the DC shootings and Justice Scalia’s recent opinion on DC gun laws:

How about a movement to amend the Constitution to explicitly provide for control of non-hunting, non-pistol weapons? Let’s have an open debate with those who think there’s an inalienable right to own semi-automatic firearms or armor-piercing bullets.

Now that’s a debate I’d like to see. And I bet law enforcement agencies would welcome it too.

I come at the issue differently. I read the Constitution as giving one the right to bear arms appropriate for a well ordered Militia. To my mind those are rifles, bazookas, and - if you can afford it - a tank. That's what you'll need if the U.S. is ever invaded.

Most gun related deaths and crimes involve concealable weapons, like pistols, and those are the weapons which pose the greatest threat to the police in the hands of criminals and gang bangers.

I'd support any and all limits on on hand guns in a heart beat.

But, enough about guns. Mostly I'd just like to be able to carry a pocket knife without having it confiscated everywhere I go.

    My two cents.
  • See, this is the problem when anyone dares to say a debate on gun control would be welcomed. People like you come up with bullshit arguments.

You really want to compare what is going on in Iran or what happened in the civil rights marches with the problems we face today in the U.S. with gun violence?

I'm not advocating the banning of all guns, certainly not for self-defense or recreation. But honestly tell me why we need gun manufacturers distributing automatic weapons to civilian buyers. You need armor-piercing bullets or an automatic weapon to hunt? If so, you ain't much of a hunter.
  • Yes, I'm watching the Iranian demonstrations and the government butchering unarmed protestors who saw their election stolen. Completely discredits you on this issue in every way possible.

Good thing the blacks down in Natchez didn't listen to you back in the 20th century as they used guns to protect themselves from the Klan and a complicit government.
